This is not a simple issue, it’s rather complex, resulting from the global supply chain feeding our modern lifestyle. Nor are the solutions simple but we feel we can make a difference by applying our efforts in 5 key areas:
We were shocked to find out that 10-20% of ocean plastic debris is comprised of pre-production pellets. So our prevention efforts start with implementing good housekeeping and pellet containment practices in the factories that make our products.
Litter is a key contributor and we support cleanup efforts through national and international organizations who lead the way with practical, pragmatic solutions and mobilize passionate volunteers to clean up thousands of miles of rivers, lakes, and shorelines.
Research documenting evidence on pellet spills, plastic fragments and micro beads done by NGOs influence industry to make changes. We are working hand in hand with these groups to expand the reach of their programs to put research tools in the hands of citizen scientists. After all, the ocean is 2/3 of the earth’s surface so it will take more than a handful of researchers to provide data and document the problem.
Education and experiential learning are critical tools for building future advocates, stewards, engineers, scientists and designers. Our program partners are focused on outreach through youth education and leadership development. Their imaginative programs captivate kids from coast to coast.
Finally, when it comes to poorly designed products, we support phasing them out and replacing them with environmentally sound alternatives. Plastic shopping bags, foam take out containers and other identified contaminants with limited take back or recycling infrastructure are all under pressure to supply more responsible solutions. We will continue to work on research, innovation and better designed alternatives.
We hope that you will be inspired to join us in this effort by supporting these organizations or similar efforts in your local area.
